PSHE

Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education (including Relationships, Sex and Health Education)

We teach PSHE throughout the term and it is primarily taught through PSHE lessons, Religious Education, Collective Worship, Science and PE but we recognise that every area of school life can contribute to RSHE as our school, in its very ethos, mission and nature, operates through positive, human relationships. All that we do adheres to the teaching of the Catholic Church, directives of the Catholic Education Service (CES), and aligns to the DfE statutory requirements (September 2020).

PSHE is an important part of your child's national curriculum learning. At St Mary & ST Joseph's we believe PSHE is a vital part of children’s education. It gives them the tools to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy, safe and prepared for life and work.  We use a wide range of resources to teach PSHE including The PSHE Association and Ten Ten Resources. These schemes of work allow us to cover a broad range of topics in a variety of ways. PSHE is taught in a range of ways and many elements of it are celebrated throughout different times of the academic year.

The PSHE Association core themes and topics which Years 1-6 cover in PSHE are-
Core Theme 1: Created and Loved by God; Health and Wellbeing
Physical health and Mental wellbeing
Growing and changing
Keeping safe
Core Theme 2: Created to Love Others; Relationships
Families and friendships
Safe relationships
Respecting ourselves and others
Core Theme 3: Created to Live in Community; Living in the Wider World
Belonging to a community
Media literacy and digital resilience
Money and work

Relationships, Sex and Health Education - Ten Ten

The Relationships and Sex Education programme we follow is called Life to the Full, from Ten Ten Resources. This is a Catholic approved programme which covers most of the Relationships and Health Education in our school and is inclusive, approachable and accessible. The Life to the Full programme is based on the structure of ‘A Model Catholic RSE Curriculum’ by the Catholic Education Service. This model curriculum was highlighted as a work of good practice by the Department of Education so we therefore have confidence that the programme will be fit for purpose in supporting the growth and development of your child.
Life to the Full is much more than a series of lessons. It is an entire platform of creative resources that will engage, inform and inspire our children and, indeed, you as parents. This includes interactive video content, story-based activities, employing a wide range of teaching tools, original worship music and an accompanying programme of classroom prayers.

Parents can access the parent portal via.

PEER ON ABUSE

What is Peer on Peer Abuse?

All children are capable of abusing their peers. This can manifest itself in a whole spectrum of behaviours including -

  • Bullying including cyberbullying
  • Sexual violence and harassment
  • Physical abuse
  • Sexting
  • Upskirting (now a criminal offence and has reporting requirements)
  • Initiation /hazing type violence and rituals

Children need to know how to report concerns and know that they will be listened to and supported.

These should include

  • Procedures to minimise the risk of peer on peer abuse
  • How allegations are recorded, investigated and dealt with
  • Clear processes as to how victims, perpetrators and any other children affected will be supported
  • Recognition of the gendered nature of peer on peer abuse but recognising, that all forms of this behaviour are unacceptable and will be taken seriously

Children will be learning about peer on peer abuse and holding discussions to help their knowledge & understanding as well as how they can feel safe and supported.

HEALTH WEEK 2022 ~ BOLLYWOOD DANCE DAY 💃🕺🏼

Still image for this video
Our favourite days the year! Thank you to professional dancer Dominique Boyle who came in to school and taught every class a dance. She was blown away with the enthusiasm, charisma and confidence of our amazing pupils. We know that the children have been learning that music and dance can reduce anxiety, blood pressure and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness & memory and this day was perfect for our ‘healthy, mind & body spirit’ week aims. Every pupil felt strong enough and confident to stand up and perform in front of the school school and I was the proudest teacher in town ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Well done everyone ⭐️⭐️⭐️

HEALTH WEEK 2022 - MUSIC DAY

Still image for this video
We know that research has shown that listening to musical pieces can reduce anxiety improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory. Active engagement with music has lasting brain benefits, such as improving concentration, memory, self-discipline, and confidence. With this in mind, here at SMSJ we decided to dedicate a whole day to music, musical instruments and singing. Each class had a different focus and the results were superb! We have so many talented children!

Autumn Term 1

We have had a very busy first term back in school. As well as working hard in class on our Ten Ten and PSHE Association curriculum we have all been trying hard to reach our SMSJ S.P.I.R.I.T  goals and learning our new SMSJ S.P.I.R.I.T song.  This is going to help inspire the children to become independent, resilient, creative learners and give them the confidence to become innovative & responsible adults.

We have been linking PSHE, S.P.I.R.I.T, PE, Dance & Drama all together during our class assemblies and have seen some brilliant performances and dances and the children have loved watching them all be so creative.

We have worked on the themes of Healthy body, mind & Spirit , looked at the 1950s and how life was different then to how it is now and Year 5 told us all about how food grows and even showed us the vegetables they had grown in the school garden.

Well done everyone.  We look forward to lots more exciting activities this half term.
