Personal, Social and Health Education (including Relationships, Sex and Health Education)
We teach PSHE weekly in all classes and it is primarily taught through PSHE lessons, Religious Education, Collective Worship, Science and PE but we recognise that every area of school life can contribute to RSHE as our school, in its very ethos, mission and nature, operates through positive, human relationships. All that we do adheres to the teaching of the Catholic Church, directives of the Catholic Education Service (CES), and aligns to the DfE statutory requirements (September 2020).
PSHE is an important part of your child's national curriculum learning. At St Mary & ST Joseph's we believe PSHE is a vital part of children’s education. It gives them the tools to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy, safe and prepared for life and work. We use a wide range of resources to teach PSHE including The PSHE Association and Ten Ten Resources. These schemes of work allow us to cover a broad range of topics in a variety of ways. PSHE is taught in a range of ways and many elements of it are celebrated throughout different times of the academic year.
The PSHE Association core themes and topics which Years 1-6 cover in PSHE are-
Core Theme 1: Created and Loved by God; Health and Wellbeing
Physical health and Mental wellbeing
Growing and changing
Core Theme 2: Created to Love Others; Relationships
Families and friendships
Respecting ourselves and others
Core Theme 3: Created to Live in Community; Living in the Wider World
Belonging to a community
Media literacy and digital resilience
Money and work
Relationships, Sex and Health Education - Ten Ten
The Relationships and Sex Education programme we follow is called Life to the Full, from Ten Ten Resources. This is a Catholic approved programme which covers most of the Relationships and Health Education in our school and is inclusive, approachable and accessible. The Life to the Full programme is based on the structure of ‘A Model Catholic RSE Curriculum’ by the Catholic Education Service. This model curriculum was highlighted as a work of good practice by the Department of Education so we therefore have confidence that the programme will be fit for purpose in supporting the growth and development of your child.
Life to the Full is much more than a series of lessons. It is an entire platform of creative resources that will engage, inform and inspire our children and, indeed, you as parents. This includes interactive video content, story-based activities, employing a wide range of teaching tools, original worship music and an accompanying programme of classroom prayers.
Parents can access the parent portal via.

MENTAL HEATH WEEK 2021
We realised as a school and staff that this years 'Mental Health Week' is more important than ever.
Many of our families are stuck at home feeling isolated and miserable so we have decided to inject lots of fun into our weeks of lockdown and think about how we were feeling and express it through poetry, music and rapping and art.
Please check Dojo for a brilliant rap from Miss Boyle all about mental health week and the challenges that you and your family can complete.
Also on Dojo is a video from the staff and pupils describing how they are becoming a 'HEALTHY HERO' and how they look after their mental, physical and spiritual health- I think you will really enjoy it :)
I look forward to seeing how you have become a healthy hero and looking at all the wonderful work you can produce.
