PHYSICAL EDUCATION
AT ST MARY & ST JOSEPHS
OUR VISION
Here at St Mary and St Joseph’s Primary School (SMSJ) we put PESSPA at the heart of our wonderful school. Our Physical Education provision ensures that children experience a safe and supportive environment that helps build a lifelong passion for sport and health. We recognise that for children to be able to perform in PE with increased confidence and competence and to advance knowledge, skills and understanding, a holistic approach is needed. Pupils learn to understand that PE is a subject that plays a huge role for their social, emotional and cognitive development as well as their spiritual, cultural and moral development and are allowed ways to explore this. A physically literate child will have the confidence and knowledge to develop a love of movement and be active for life- this is our aim at SMSJ.
Each child, regardless of gender, race or ability will be given the opportunity to take part in positive, fun, challenging lessons that linked with our S.P.I.R.I.T values, will help them to become innovative, independent members of society who will not be afraid to participate in, take risks and even lead situations.
Specially-designed units of work linked to the PE National Curriculum created by the 'Beyond the Physical' team are explored, taught and built upon by the PE specialist from EYFS-Year 6 pupils. A balanced and broad PE curriculum focused on the mastery of fundamental movement skills, and a wide variety of extra-curricular opportunities, competitions and activities are available to enable all children to achieve the 4 aims of the National Curriculum. Learning will be revisited if necessary each year to ensure progress is made and that there is secure knowledge and understanding of skills. A mixture of traditional and new emerging sports are played during the year and through assessment and constant observations, groups focused on SEN, pupil premium and our High achieving children are ran throughout the week.
Beyond the Physical Learning Themes are easy-to-use, friendly resources for planning and delivering high-quality PE. Each Learning Theme is centred around three key words, which are the success criteria for the unit. The PE specialist uses these as a base to build upon and create the best lessons and curriculum suited to our pupils.
Families are encouraged to explore activities outside of school and supported with ideas and decisions that will help the children to be brave enough to join clubs and gain the confidence and skills to become physically active for life. Our PESSPA notice board celebrates the activities and achievements that our pupils do in and outside of school and encourages our younger children to aspire to their older role models.

SUMMER HALF TERM πΎπβ½οΈπ
This term in PE we have been working hard on improving our underarm and overarm throwing and catching skills and concentrating on always being in the ready position when fielding. We have discussed when each throw should be used and the best ways to catch balls of differing heights.
We have looked at different ways of striking the ball and used a variety of equipment to do so. We looked at what position our bodies should be in to get the best hit possible and have tried hard to improve our sending and receiving skills.
KS1 have worked on mastering their fundamental movement skills and started to use their skills with lots of equipment and have even explored the use of tennis rackets and balls. They have been working super hard on their throwing and catching and have made massive improvements.
They are using different equipment to practice sending a ball and have been encouraged to practice every day with balls or even socks at home and use their dominant hand as the bat.
EMERGING SPORTS AND A LIFELONG LOVE OF SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY β€οΈπ
We have lots of new equipment including table tennis tables, quidditch, four square, volleyball nets, strikeball nets and pickle ball bats.
The children are loving trying out all the new skills and last week and from KS1 have started to explore the different skills needed to progress through the stages of STRIKEBALL. This is our new exciting game that involves speed, acceleration, agility and coordination.
ACTIVE MATHS INTERVENTION

We hope you all have fun as a family completing them and don't forget to send lots of pictures and videos into dojo.
LOCKDOWN PE FUN IN SCHOOL
As some of our pupils are in school every day we decided that along with our curriculum lessons, we would learn some new skills.
Our amazing staff members brought in bikes, balance bikes, scooters and even a pogo stick for our pupils to use. We had so many children master a new skill and start to develop a life long love of cycling and being active outside.
We learnt to skip individually and in groups and set challenges to our pupils at home. We loved watching their attempts at trying to beat our scores. We also encouraged children at home to get on their bikes and scooters and send their videos in to us. We explored speed stacking skills and had lots of competitive challenges, even against Miss Boyle.
Despite the cold weather, it was brilliant to be outside being active for so much of the day.
Well done everyone
