Reading

Children have opportunities to read their reading books daily in school. It is essential that children bring their reading book in their book bags daily.

In year 2, the children begin the school year following RWI phonics. During this period, children will be assessed and placed into groups based on their ability. Whilst your child is in a RWI group, they will bring home 3 reading books; 1 they have practised, 1 unseen book with the sounds that they have learnt and a library book which they have chosen. Reading books are changed every Thursday.

Once children have completed the RWI program, they will progress onto Accelerated Reader. Children will be assessed termly and provided with a book reading level range. Children are encouraged to read at least 3 times a week. When the children complete their reading book they will be given a short quiz to complete. Children are given the responsibility of choosing their own reading book from the library to take home and enjoy. The Accelerated Reader Program is used by the Teacher to track the children's progress, provide challenges and celebrate the children's reading success.
