Tunnels, turrets and towers - Autumn 1

Tunnels, turrets and towers.

Our Autumn Nature Walk

We have designed and built a wide range of  towers, tunnels and bridges using a varity of different materials including cardboard, straws, lollipop sticks, play-doh and construction kits. We have worked individually, in pairs and also in groups. We have shared our ideas and our designs have amazed our teachers.

We have been learning how to add two number and three numbers together. We have also learnt how to use inverse operations.

We now understand the words ‘half’ and ‘halving’ ‘double’ and ‘doubling’. We have used numicon and cubes to help us to understand how to half and double numbers, which has been great fun.

We worked in groups with Mrs Badat and Mrs Wearden to build bridges using marshmallows and dried spaghetti to build two types of bridge, one low and one tall in each group. We constructed identical bridges in our teams to make this a fair test.

We added a paper basket and attached via a paperclip to the top of the bridge. We filled the basket with pennies until the bridge snapped.  We then

counted the pennies to see if the low bridge or the tall bridge was stronger. This was great fun and we learnt lots about science experiments and how to make them fair.
